Since today is the last day of September and I know I won’t be finishing another book today, I am going to share with you the three books I managed to read this month. I finished to comic books and one Kindle book. I think that this is a good variety. My first AIDA self-paced class is starting on Monday, since that is when my books are supposed to be at my desk at work. I’m still going to try to read at least 1 book a month for myself.
Jem and the Holograms Vol. 1: Showtime by Kelly Thompson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
My friend Danielle let me borrow the first three volumes of this series. I just finished the first one and I have to say that I LOVE the illustrations. The comic book characters are very pretty and eye catching. Let’s get one thing straight, you aren’t reading these books for the stories but for the art. The story is pretty good too though. I didn’t find it boring. Well, the only part that I thought was boring was the pages were the lyrics just goes across the pages and there is no action going on. I like looking at those pages though, but it’s hard to follow the lyrics that I just give up. I look forward to reading the other two and seeing how the story progresses. I have to say that so far my favorite character is Kimber. There’s is just something so genuine and corky about her. I also love her various hairstyles throughout the book. The girl just can’t make up her mind.
Jem and the Holograms #2 by Kelly Thompson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Another good read. I really liked the art work, although I liked the first book more. I enjoyed the story line more on this one and the ending was very surprising. I think the series is getting interesting. This one was Christmas themed, so there is that. I like how the story is developing and it’s becoming more than just a mindless comic. It’s more of a light summer read than a comic. I’ve never read a comic that builds on itself like a book. The Archie books I read in my youth never seemed to carry a storyline from one into another. I’m looking forward to starting the third.
AMBER by Nancy Adams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I did not expect the events that happened in this book. It was really good, but really gruesome. It’s a bit gory, but I could get pass that part. The story is new and fresh. I don’t think I ever heard about anyone writing about this before and I’ve never read anything similar to it. When you have nothing to compare it to, I guess, I am giving it a higher score strictly because it’s such a new, exciting concept of YA Fantasy. I will read the second book in the series, because I am intrigued. I want to know what happens next. It is a bit immature at times, but the main character is a 18 year old girl. There will be immaturity. If it wasn’t so gory, I would have given it 5 stars. She’s a monster, though. You kinda have to see the gory stuff for it to truly sink in. Doesn’t mean it has to be so descriptive though. I usually enjoy descriptive, but it was a bit too descriptive. Also, sex, sex, sex. This book has a whole lotta sex in it, not for the homophobic. There is some girl on girl action. I really did enjoy the story though and I’m very interested to see what happens next. It’s like a good horror story: a good plot, gore, and sex. lol
In the coming months, I may only have one book to show case, but I’ll probably just make a deeper review about it then and it’ll be that month’s feature book. I think I might do some posts about doing a self-paced online class as well. I might be doing only two posts a week from now on, because of my books coming in on Monday. We will see. I think I can still have a few prewritten to post up during the week and those are usually reviews. So, generally, they are easier for me to write a punch to post on certain days. I think I’ll have two books read in October. My goal will be three. Let’s see if I can squeeze it in!
With Love,
